Ladakh
Nine days at four thousand metres. Thin air, long light, and a road that ends where the mountains start.
Every gompa begins at a gate.
Carved stone, painted flags, a threshold you cross on foot. The valley noise stops on the other side.
Then the courtyard opens.
Prayer wheels down one wall, butter lamps in the alcoves, and a day measured by where the light sits on the stone.
